20th October - Return of the God
I was wholeheartedly joyous when I learned, earlier this week, that Ricky Gervais is once again set to touch down in my native City of Oxford, with his brand-new tour, Armageddon. My own relationship with Gervais is one of delay... I struggled to buy into the hype of 'The Office' at a time when the nation raved over this groundbreaking new mockumentary. I now, partly, believe that to be due to my age, as I was 12 when the BBC series aired, and my understanding of the nuances of office politics was so non-relatable to any kind of professional arena, that most of the subtle genius of the show flew right over my head.
Instead, it was 2005's 'Extras' which really tickled my fancy and from there, the brilliance of the man hit me like a 10-tonne truck. I purchased the DVD boxsets of 'The Office' and was soon after introduced to the 'Ricky Gervais Show', a unique podcast featuring Karl Pilkington, long before it went mainstream via the animated Channel 4 series. Since then, I've followed Gervais almost fanatically... His stand-up trilogy of 'Politics', 'Animals' and 'Fame' was a firm favourite in my Christmas 2007 gifts, and 'Science' followed soon after, in my Uni days.
Now, after reviewing his 'SuperNature' show in 2019, a review which Gervais himself posted on his Twitter feed, delighted I'd called him a 'little Hampstead Cunt' within the article, the chubby funster is back with 'Armageddon'. I've no idea what sort of material he'll be embarking on at the start of November, but you best believe I'll be there, adding another string the bow of my Ricky-fandom. There are quite a few nights in my calendar which make me feel a huge jolt of excitement over the coming months, but none more so...
... Than the return of stand-up comedy's greatest God.
