26th December - My 2023 Goals
I was driving my partner and her friend home from a bottomless brunch a few days ago, and her friend remarked to me that she often reads this site, and was unsure on how to fill the gap in 2023 when this diary will become defunct. After all, 2023 can't be 'The Year of the Gable', too. That would defeat the purpose. With more free time in my hands next year on account of the spare 200-odd hours (or 30 full working days) it has taken to construct these blog posts over the course of the past year (I did the maths), I will look to find alternative ways to spend my time.
I've already contacted a local piano teacher, to begin my lessons with her in 2023 and learn the craft of my Grandfather. Something I didn't tap into nearly enough when he was alive. In fact, I don't even know what happened to the giant piano he kept in his living room, or where it went following his death. But I wish I'd learned to play more than just 'No Matter What' by Boyzone on it, when I was 8/9 years old. In 2023, I really want to gain that skill, because learning to play an instrument isn't just a year-long ability, but a lifelong one.
I'm also looking to find a sport I can partake in on a solo-level, through times of isolated relaxation when I need to clear my mind or bask in my own company. Snooker is the front-runner, having already frequented a local Snooker-hall with my own membership post-COVID in 2020. But for so many years now, I've wanted to get into Golf. The problem, I'd imagine, is that I'm shit at it, and the equipment is terribly expensive. But I guess that's the same problem facing all beginners in any walk of life. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and become the next Tiger Woods through hours of practice.
Furthermore, I'm looking to fill my calendar with at least one semi-decently sized 'social outing' per month. Sometimes that might be something smaller (for example, I've got a few guest-list spots confirmed for Fatboy Slim's Brixton show in March), but then often it may be something larger, too. May is a month when I'll be spending a fortnight in South Africa. In June, I'm looking to return to Ibiza, whilst August will be Creamfields, and October is Amsterdam Dance Event. As for September? Perhaps a combo... Oktoberfest, and the Rugby World Cup in Paris. Over the course of the same long-weekend? Perhaps. 2023 is almost here...
... So let's go and get what we want from it.
