15th October - My Unpopular Opinion
Whilst unloading my Coco Pops on the karzy this morning, I stumbled across a video in which Tony Blair, mid-late 90s, was opposed with a question from an angry member of the public, who argued that the Labour government could be doing more. With the video labelled as "This is why he was undefeated", Blair soon displayed his cojones, proving himself a worthy recipient of such title, stepping up to the mic and assertively, passionately, accurately, and factually, pointing out to the debater several of the policies his government had introduced which were now benefitting everyday folk, features and changes not implemented in this country for more than 100 years under the Tories.
These included child benefit increases, and the introduction of the national minimum wage. I approached the comments section with some caution. For when Blair is mentioned, the usual accompaniment is usually some smart-Alec retort about his role in the Iraq war. But it seems, history is now starting to ease away the pains of Blair's negatives - for which, there were so very few - and people are finally beginning to appreciate all the wonderful things he did for this country. Do I think we should have got involved with the Afghanistan debacle? Perhaps not. War is, after all, usually the worst choice available in 99% of situations and should, in my opinion, be avoided at all costs.
But take away that particular error of judgement, and I ask you today, to name one policy Blair fluffed for this Country. It's near on impossible. He brought about the most radical and forward-thinking changes the United Kingdom had seen, and has since seen, benefitting the general public and everyday households in a way his successors could only dream of. From the charisma-vacuum of Gordon Brown, and the smug Iggle Piggle elitism of David Cameron, the U.K has since lurked from disaster to disaster, failing to remember that General Elections are not personal popularity contests like a 'Big Brother' vote between candidates, but instead a representation of ideologies from an entire party. R.I.P. Lord Corbyn.
Culminating with the worst of the lot; The evil, unapologetic, stubborn, arrogant, and psychopathic narcissist with the messy blonde mop, we've now ended up with a Woman who - much like Theresa May before her - is certainly not 'unlikeable' but just seems entirely out of her depth, and is set to face the wrath of her own party. Liz Truss could be ousted from the role later this week, just a matter of days since she inherited the position. The title of the Blair video I watched was intriguing. "Undefeated" was the word used, and undefeated was exactly what he was. Winning an incredible run of three consecutive elections over a span of more than 10 years, Tony saw off various rivals, from the likes of John Major, William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith, and Michael Howard. By the time he voluntarily passed his relay torch over to Brown, Blair was cemented, at least by my own (unpopular) opinion...
... As the greatest PM this nation has ever had.
