30th September - The Fridge Theory

As far back as I can remember, I've been a huge fan of Ricky Gervais. Extras, The Office, Supernature, Politics, Fame, Animals, The Invention of Lying, Ghost Town, Life on the Road, Afterlife, Cemetery Junction, Life's Too Short, An Idiot Abroad... Honestly, you name it, I've seen it when it comes to this genius of a man. But perhaps the most brilliant chapter of all his career's work came in 2006 when a friend introduced me to 'The Ricky Gervais Show', a series of radio shows which were downloadable as 'Podcasts' long before they became such a trending medium of media.

I would regularly howl with laughter at the musings of Karl Pilkington, and the witticism of Stephen Merchant, with the series later spawning a hugely successful animates series in 2010/11, aired on Channel 4. For as long as I've always been a Gervais fanboy, I've also been someone who has struggled with maintaining a healthy weight. Or a 'chubby funster', as Gervais himself would label me. Among my habits with food, I noticed that I tend to not really have much of an appetite in the mornings, or even early afternoons, but instead, when my body begins to really 'come alive' with my night owl mindset, so does my stomach. A 7pm 'breakfast' which also serves as my evening meal is not unusual for myself, and often, it is come 10pm or 11pm that I'm at my most ravenous.

This often results in late-night snacking, and ventures towards the fridge to see what I can find around the shelves. Usually cheese, or a yoghurt, or my biggest vice of all - Tuna mayo and sweetcorn sandwich filler, often just eaten 'bareback' from the tub with a giant spoon. I realised, that if I could control my evening hunger, I could also gain better control of my weight, and so my mind was instantly catapulted back to 'The Fridge Theory', one of Pilkington's most outlandish claims. Yet, it might just be genius. He argued that by excluding the 'light' feature inside a fridge, we could see a hugely positive enhancement in the national battle against obesity. Don't just let me paraphrase though....

... Here's the man himself, to explain it properly.
