13th September - 'Class'
Last night, my partner and I were watching something on TV, and expressed our discontent at the behaviour of one of the people on our screen (It was Whitney, and her 'perky Pete'-isms, if you've been watching the same show?). We regularly like to analyse the behaviour of the participants on this show, and my partner remarked that one Woman on there had 'no class'. I fully agreed, but then I thought, well, what defines class? Why do some people have it, and some people just... Don't? More so, can class be learned?
I guess, to have 'class' or appear 'classy', you have to show decorum, grace, and elegance, but a lot of people mix sophistication with being 'boring'. The reasoning for this is that so often, classy folk, sit quietly, or can appear introverted, but in reality, they're usually analysing the surroundings and behaviour of those around them. This is a sign of wisdom, and maturity. After all, you can only learn when you listen, not when you speak. One of the key signs of class, in 2022, can often be portrayed across social media.
Many users display perfectionism, producing crisp and high quality content for their audience, aesthetically pleasing images or video, framed well, and produced with aesthetically pleasing symmetry. But to display a lack of class in this area would be to throw a phone around in the air and produce a blurry mess which viewers can't even properly watch back with any sort of clarity. Class is about taking care of how you are perceived, and your overall reputation.
With my partner and I currently in the midst of our wedding planning preparations, we were both in agreement of the 'classy' experience we wish to constitute on this day. That means no children (as cute as they are, we all know that a screaming brat sliding across the dance-floor is the first way to absolutely ruin the elegance of a Wedding vibe). It also means a full ban on any sort of 'Iceland buffet' foods. Wotsits, pineapple and cheese on a stick, cocktail sausages. This is a celebration of elegance, not a weekend on a Pontins mini-break. Likewise, there will be no shit 'cheesey' music, this isn't an 8th Birthday Party, so if you're expecting the Grease mega-mix, you'll be sorely disappointed. It seems, that class is a mindset, it is not something which can be purchased. After all, what's that old saying?...
... You can't buy class.
