22nd August - My 14 hour commute
I woke up at 5am today, and set off for work at 5.30am. I was supposed to arrive at 10.30am, which - in itself - is quite a long commute, I admit. But 5 hours on buses, coaches and trains can go weirdly fast when you’re ploughing through podcasts etc. We live in a world where the whole universe is available to us at our fingertips, so I try not to complain about these things. But, at the same time, I fail to see why my 5 hour commute was extended into a 7 hour commute today, simply on account of the appalling situation with public transport in this country.
Strikes, I’m told. Rail strikes. Okay, they happened Saturday & Sunday. So why is there still an issue on the Monday? Do you know the average salary for a train driver in the United Kingdom? £60,000 per year. Mate, for 60k a year, I genuinely think I’d let Ainsley Harriott tickle my prostate with his spicy meat. Let’s be honest, they don’t even really ‘drive’ them. The wheels are aligned to the track naturally and they press ‘stop’ and ‘go’. It’s like using the accelerator and brake round LEGOLAND when you get your first ever driving ‘license’ at the Windsor resort as a kid. Striking? For more pay? When you’re on 60k? Get a fucking grip, lads.
