10th July - Drink to get Drunk
I've long held increasingly negative opinions towards alcohol for some time now. As I grow older, the hangovers are certainly more potent, and I try to avoid them at all costs. I had considered - and flirted, strongly, with - the idea of giving up alcohol altogether, but life is all about balance and having to completely give something up is usually a sign of an unhealthy relationship with it. For what it's worth, my relationship with alcohol is very healthy. I don't drink at home, and I'll maybe actually go out and drink alcohol - at most - once every 6 months or so.
I've only been 'drunk' once since a bottomless brunch back in January which extended from the standard 2 hours, to around 5 hours, on account of a tight relationship with the bar owner. During that time, I've been to a club twice (February, and June), and one pool party in the Caribbean (May). At the latter, the drinks were all inclusive, which influenced by decision greatly. But overall, I now see no point in drinking unless to get drunk. You also have to plan your drinking out now as you get older, and show good long-term planning. For example, if I'm heading to a Wedding or a Christening tomorrow, I know I can't get drunk tonight, because I'm gonna feel like shit tomorrow.
Anything you spend money on which you only later piss down on a toilet bowl, is a severe waste of funds. Hard-earned money which could be spent on constructive advancements in evolving your mindset, such as trips abroad. Yesterday, I was out with friends for a total of around 7 hours (4 of those actively in/around bars), and in that time, consumed 1 x pint of cider, 1 x mango cocktail, 1 x small glass of milk (a heartburn cure for the cocktail), and 1 x pint of lemonade and lime cordial. My point is, you almost have to 'decide' - mentally - after the first alcoholic drink if your intention is to get 'drunk' today.
I was fully aware that 1 cider and 1 cocktail wasn't gonna get me intoxicated, so I realised there was no point in carrying on. Equally, 7 or 8 ciders won't get me drunk, but suddenly, I'm £40 down, rather than £10 down if I choose to have the same quantity in lemonades. I'm not against drinking, not at all. I like getting drunk as much as the next man/woman. But I know, that to get sufficiently tipsy, I'm gonna need 10 pints, 5 jagerbombs, a few sambucas, a tequila, and a couple of JD & cokes. If that's what I wanna do, I need to commit to it early, and really go for it. Else I'm just wasting money and time on drinking for the sake of it. I, also, can't be getting drunk at such a civil social occasion, when I know I've got lots of work to do the next day (today). Not every occasion is a stag do. Moderation is key. As you get older, you might get drunk 1 or 2 times per year. So when that time comes, you can plan it carefully, and actively choose...
... To drink, to get drunk.
