9th June: Ghana DAY FOUR - Ostriches & Malaria

DAY FOUR: As the dawn of Wednesday broke, we were greeted by the daily sound of the children performing their morning prayers and songs outside on the terraced area with a big drum at 7am. We ventured downstairs and started to distribute many of the gifts we'd purchased for them via the money raised from our GoFundMe donations. In amongst these 4 jam-packed suitcases of toys, clothes, footwear, and stationary, were the full collection of Harry Potter books, and various mountains of sports equipment such as footballs, tennis balls, cones, cricket and baseball bats, tennis racquets, shuttlecocks, frisbees, and plastic 'crazy golf' gear. We led a P.E lesson outside, where I created a game involving throwing a bouncing ball at numbered soft tiles on the floor - which, to my surprise, proved a resounding success - whilst Sarah utilised her nursery experience to teach the children a game involving a giant parachute. We had so much fun during this lesson in particular, even though the searing daily heat of 35+ celsius was proving somewhat draining. By this point, our legs were also starting to feel rather itchy on account of all the insect bites etc, though we'd purchased a range of expensive vaccinations and malaria tablets before arriving, so knew we were well equipped to deal with the mosquitos. On Wednesday evening, we hiked across a local mountain-top, where we were greeted by a farm full of giant ostriches, even getting to feed a few and take a close up look (and hold) of their gigantic eggs, laid in the fields.
