4th June - The Drink Vs Music balance

Your body naturally slows down as you get older, I've been told that numerous times. I've also been told 'Wait 'til you hit your thirties, then you'll feel it'... And can confirm, that's also true. The biggest difference is in recovery, not so much the ability to 'do it' like I did before, but in how long it takes me to then return to normal. Can I still guzzle down a pint in 5 seconds on a good day? Absolutely. Show me a tray of sambucas and I'll give any young whipper-snapper a run for their money. Likewise when it comes to raving, and physical endurance events.

But can I now get up the next morning in the same spritely fashion I did at the age of 20? Absolutely not. There's the headache to contend with, the dry mouth, the general fatigue, and above all, the aching muscles and stiff joints which take a fair few minutes/hours to 'limber up' again upon clambering out of bed. The secret to success, like all things in life, is balance. Last night (well, technically, this morning, we only got in a few hours ago), we were out in London's most notorious club until sunrise. Rewind a decade and that would have meant a 5-hour pre-drinks sesh, where a minimum of 1 x 1L bottle of vodka per person is consumed, then there's further drinks in the club, and time to wake up today and do it all again ahead of Creamfields this afternoon.

These days, I still attend such events due to my love for the music, and that will never change, but you just need to play things out in your mind a little more carefully. Music and drinking are NOT linked, and anyone who cannot attend a music event without an alcoholic drink in their hand is not a music fan to begin with. We are not here for the alcohol, we're here for the DJ, plain and simple. Knowing we'd be raving for a good 8-9 hours today, I knew that I'd have to go easy last night. A few beers at pre-drinks, nothing crazy, followed by a couple of softies in the club. Maybe some food on the way home, and definitely some form of breakfast today.

At which point, you're then able to crack open a few whiskey-cokes this morning, knowing the stomach is lined, get pretty tipsy before the train journey to the event for hashtag good vibezz, and then ease off and only drink softies at the festival (the extortionate £6 per can (minimum) prices, mean I never have, and never will, purchase alcoholic drinks inside club/festival settings). Some more food on the way home, something high-carb and high-protein, and we're good to go tomorrow morning after a nice refreshing shower. In your 30s, you can certainly do everything you ever did before....

... Just, now, with a more responsible mindset.
