12th June: Ghana DAY SEVEN - Injuries & Adoption

DAY SEVEN: A trip abroad, or... Well anywhere, wouldn't quite be complete, without my ability to absolutely stack it in front of hundreds of watching eyes. From dislocating my knee on the Student Union dancefloor or sploshing into the pool at Ushuaia during 'BBC Radio 1 in Ibiza, 2015', to breaking my elbow at a recent party in the Caribbean, I'm a self-confessed walking liability, and so here, I kept to tradition. With the rainwater gathered in puddles on the slippy steps of the living quarters, I went flying down a full flight, with Sarah amusingly pointing out that as she looked round, both my ankles had turned in opposite directions as I did the splits down each step, my feet skidding and clanging into each railing as they went. This was also a day when - after teaching Minister Kwame how to swim in a nearby pool - we returned back to the compound to find the creation of the new fence in tatters. Rain-pools had filled the open holes in concrete, and caused the entire ledge to collapse entirely, adding another £500 onto the bill costs. We were only grateful that this giant mass of rubble and debris had not performed such a landslide on a day when the children were in school, or close to the nearby danger. As we sat around in the evening,  after a game of football with the residents and painting a few of the doors, we nestled into Inshirah, our favourite little girl from the compound, and also the youngest. She was abandoned by her parents, and at the age of just 3, was clearly identified by ourselves as the one girl I the group who really needed those parental figures in her life. She was receptive to love and compassion, and eternally hungry, but was something of a black sheep amongst the children in the compound and often cut something of a 'loner' figure. Sarah & I even discussed the possibility of adopting her as our own in future, and this is something we will continue to monitor as the years go by.
