28th May - Top 10: Destinations
I wrote this list before flying out to Punta Cana, so it may need rejigging when I return, but as things stand, these are the Top 10 places I've visited:
10. New York
I have to admit, I felt a bit underwhelmed by the 'Big Apple' at first. The fact I had violent food poisoning whilst there, and the weather was grey AF probably didn't help. But once I got into the swing of things, I really started to appreciate the unique nature of 'London on steroids', particularly around Times Square.
9. Prague
A City steeped in rich history and wonderful architecture, the Czech capital plays host to the finest elements of Eastern Europe (cobbled streets and alleyways packed with character), whilst still offering a more modern touch of Western culture. Incredible beer, and at a pound-a-pint, incredibly cheap, too!
8. Amsterdam
Forget the Playboy models in red-lit windows, thrusting their mammaries at you and enticing you in with a beckon of the finger upon every glance. Forget the relaxed stance on 'brownies', if you can. Amsterdam is a cultural hub of wondrous canals, history, smoked cheeses, Heineken, and lunatics on bicycles.
7. Rome
No other City in Europe can match Rome per-square metre for heritage, and ancient artefacts. An emporium of landmarks, including the iconic Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, and the Gladiator's Colosseum... The food's not bad, either! Anyone for the three P's? Pizza, pasta, Peroni.
6. Barcelona
Ask any fierce Catalonian and they'll tell you that Barcelona is different. This is not 'mainland Spain' in their opinion, this is unique. Even the famous Barca Football side refer to themselves as 'More than a Club'. Combining the best of City life, with relaxed long beaches, and sumptuous paella, Barca is special.
5. Positano
A small Italian village off the South Coast of Naples, this colourful province boasts a pebble beachfront and narrow winding streets lined with boutique shops and restaurants, leading down to vast arrays of fresh Sorrento limoncello. A steep setting blessed by a backdrop of stacked houses, this is paradise on Earth.
4. Las Vegas
My own experience of Vegas was one of searing heat, 46 celsius, in fact. But outside of the sweltering conditions, the way 'Sin City' lights up at night in a sensory overload of flashing lights and debauchery is a true bucket-list 'tick'. Crazy portion sizes on food and drink, too. You'll never go hungry here!
3. Paris
Certain pockets of the internet will try to tell you that Paris is 'dirty'. Truth is, most big Cities are. But you'll never find another destination which offers the elite sophistication, class, and charm of the escargot-munching, wine-drinking Parisians, led by iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe.
2. Ibiza
If house music is a 'feeling', then so is Ibiza, the spiritual home of dance, freedom, expression, and creativity. Unlike cheap and tacky 'party rival' locations such as Malia and Magaluf, Ibiza is a hedonistic white isle of paradise built on a tradition of hippie heritage, and of course, the greatest DJs in the World.
1. Miami
"Miami's the fucking bomb". The now famous quote from Steve Angello only seems to become incredibly accurate with every year which passes. Luscious white sands and crystal clear aqua oceans are topped by tropical palm trees, a real Latina vibe influenced by the nearby Cuba and Mexico, and stunning art-deco buildings along 'Ocean Drive', in addition to those 80s inspired neon colours of a 'Vice City' vibe.
