23rd May - Top 10: Movies

We continue, with this week's countdown of Top 10 lists whilst I'm away, and today, it's movies!

10. Joker

The first of two portrayals of the same character in this countdown, Joaquin Phoenix delivered a beautifully uncomfortable yet ultimately 'real' and gritty version of Arthur Fleck in this modern classic.

9. Avengers: End Game

Worth an inclusion for that scene alone ("On your left, Cap"), no movie has ever generated the same audience reaction in cinematic history as this finale. A stunning end to the original Avengers' MCU journey.

8. Rocky

Through my youth, I favoured the high-drama madness of Rocky III and Rocky IV, but over time, I've now come to appreciate the authenticity of this original. Regardless, the entire series is a masterpiece.

7. Fight Club

If I utter another word, I'm breaking the first rule. But this anti-capitalist wonderland was so wonderfully clever, and packed with thought-provoking themes, that it deserves a spot in any Top 10 list.

6. Interstellar

Nolan at his absolute peak, and the first of three movies from the G.O.A.T director, in this countdown. Matthew McConaughey delivers the performance of a lifetime in this emotional sci-fi tearjerker.

5. Avengers: Infinity War

For shock factor alone, there is perhaps no movie which can ever rival the harrowing events of this one as (spoiler alert) a whole wealth of the most iconic characters of all time were killed off... Or were they?

4. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Undoubtedly the greatest of all episodes in the Star Wars saga, gone is the whinge-bag Luke Skywalker we saw in Episode IV, and now he must face the fearsome Darth Vader, who's got a secret to tell him...

3. Inception

The one criticism many level at this film is the stereotypical "I didn't understand it", but re-watch it, focus on the details, and you'll realise it's not that complex. A superb concept led by the talents of Mr Di Caprio.

2. The Dark Knight

Iconic on so many levels. Remarkably, it doesn't even feel like a comic-book flick. Powered by the late, great, Heath Ledger, who delivers (most probably) the greatest acting performance in cinematic history.

1. Wolf of Wall Street

The movie which birthed a million memes. This 3-hour Scorsese masterpiece packs in 506 f-bombs, Jonah Hill devouring a live goldfish, and a scintillating Margot Robbie giving head in the front seat of a Ferrari.
