11th May - Does anyone read these anymore?
The answer to that, is that I have no idea. Other than the metric of daily 'views' on the stats page, but it's kinda weird, you know... There were two main reasons why I started writing these entries. One was to provide myself with discipline. If you don't have a goal everyday, then you'll end up tempted to slip into a wonderland of wastefulness, spunking away time on the PlayStation, or in front of Netflix. I know, that even on days when I don't have any work to complete (a true rarity), that if I don't need to open my laptop, I can quite easily fall into the trap of laziness.
By knowing I have to commit to a diary entry every day, it forces me to open the laptop lid, and once that baby is open, it's Pandora's Box time. Now, I may as well delve into all my other various projects too, because here I am, at my desk, fingers furiously bashing away. This diary is a real severe form of discipline and daily motivation. One which has served me well, so far this year. The other reason was to build up a bank full of memories which I could look back on in future. Sure, there's great joy in writing in a small journal with an expensive biro, but over time, as we move home, or become disorganised, it's easy to lose things, or for items to fall apart, physically. Especially paper-based products like books, which wear away quicker than most materials.
It would be somewhat romantic to look back on sepia-stained pages 30 years from now, flicking through the vinegar-scented spine as potential Grandchildren marvel at Grampy's wit, but an online database of entries like this is sure to stand a longer test of time. In the same way, I'm one of the few to still consistently use Facebook. Not for the benefit of others, but the site essentially offers me free storage for all of my photo albums, in a way which other hosting sites (Dropbox etc) would charge for. Don't use social networks to 'poke' or 'super-like' from here on in... Use them as money-saving storage centres, designed to hold all the memories we can one day look back upon, preserved in 4K quality. I don't know whether people still read these anymore. But in all honesty, and with the upmost of polite respect...
... It makes no difference to me, either way.
