27th Mar - Can an opinion be 'incorrect'?
Fact... A thing that is known or proved to be true.
Somewhat infamously throughout my life, people have - at points - taken offence to my refute that an opinion can be 'wrong'. Whether or not Michael Schumacher was a more natural driver than Lewis Hamilton, for example, is a topic which can be discussed with the added implementation of stats, examples, references, but there is no definitive answer or conclusion on how you would judge the final verdict. I accept that such conversations are a clash of opinions, and that neither party is 'incorrect' in their thinking. Likewise, the debate over whether or not Paris is a greater City than London. For both the above examples I've provided, you'll have your own opinions. You'll be team 'Paris', or maybe team 'Schumacher', or any interchangeable combinations of the two discussion points. London/Hamilton, Paris/Hamilton, London/Schumacher, and so on and so forth.
However, I am somewhat cemented in my viewpoint that some opinions, can be 'incorrect'. Because societally, we - as human beings - accept that there are certain viewpoints which are simply, fact. For example.... "Black people should be treated worse than white people, based on the colour of their skin." An opinion. Luckily not one held by myself, but held by certain folk in the world. But we all recognise that such an opinion is, actually, incorrect. Such mindsets have no 'debatable point' in the same way you can argue the case for Paris over London by referring to the superb restaurants, or iconic patisseries.
These sorts of opinions can rightly be deemed codswallop, as they're not subjective, and that's the key. I, for example, like many, possess the opinion that Avicii was the most talented music producer of all time. But I'm not ignorant enough to accept that others may argue the case for Dr Dre, Max Martin, Quincy Jones, Daft Punk, Timbaland, or any others from the 'legendary' pantheon across several genres. It's entirely subjective and there's no unit of measurement we can use to assess our final result. However, if you state that your opinion is that Tottenham are a more successful club than Arsenal, I'll be able to quickly provide the stats and evidence, with reference to history and records, to educate you on why your opinion is wrong. What we've learned, specifically within the past few years in the United Kingdom thanks to the idiocy of the Brexit vote and the Tory success in the 2019 General Election, is that more often than not...
... Opinions can be incorrect.
