24th Jan - Detective Gable
It's been an eventful 24 hours. There was the paradox of a sensational truffle brie mash at Big Gord's yesterday, combined with extremely mediocre service. Followed by the wonder of Wicked, which couldn't quite live up to the splendour of many of the Apollo's pizzazz filled siblings. Don't get me wrong, there were a flurry of really sensational moments. Laura Pick displayed exemplary vocals whilst soaring into the sky as Elphaba, whilst Sophie Evans nailed the role of self-absorbed Glinda, aka. the posh totty of Oz. Yet despite this, Wicked is one of London's longest-running musicals, and it feels as though 'the new kids on the block' have taken the Victoria-based spectacle's best bits, and then improved upon them.
Certainly, the carpet ride in Aladdin, that spectacularly choreographed opening in The Lion King, or the powerfully emotive chorus of Prince of Egypt trump the green bonanza in this aspect. Though, such is the long-term nature of Wicked, that demand is nowhere near as insatiable as the aforementioned and thus, proved a huge positive when sitting in an entirely empty Row L... Bliss! Elsewhere, I played the role of detective yesterday morning when I saw a stray debit card lodged into the timetable at the local bus stop. The title on the card featured a double-barrel name, one a little more peculiar than your basics such as 'Smith' or 'Jones'. I thought I'd search it in Instagram/Facebook etc, and luckily found a local girl with a matching Surname. Not only was the lady an employee of one of my former clients, but she had a number of mutual friends and work(s)/ed in the same industry as myself.
After a bit of conversional back & forth with the matching woman, she informed me that the card belonged to her sister and so she'd put me in contact with her. Alas, here we are, just over 24 hours later, and the girl in question has literally just departed my humble abode, with her debit card safely restored into her possession. She even issued me with a restaurant dining voucher at her local place of work to express her gratitude... Evidence of the classic 'it's nice to be nice' mantra! In other news, today was ridiculously cold, and after staying in a hotel with my Mother last night where she proceeded to inexplicably turn the kettle on at 6.30am, my morning commute to work today was one spent with my head sleepily propped against the window. With this in mind, I've decided to sack off the 7-a-side this evening (we'd only get thrashed anyway), in favour of a hot bath and an early night...
... Maybe I'll even cash in that dinner voucher!
