15th Jan - Dancing Queen

Well, last night got a little interesting huh? I fell into 'the basic bitch trap' of jiving around to commercial drivel in one of those overpriced cocktail bar chains where a faint waft of Paco Rabanne & Gonorrhea fill the air... Be At One, All Bar One, Insert Other Name Involved 'One' and 'Bar' here. I've realised, that like many of you, when intoxicated, I possess a complete alter-ego. A gremlin inside of me which comes out to play and completely does away with the sober version of myself. This alter-ego is dangerously confident, sassy and sensual, and most worrying of all, delusional when it comes to dancing.

I can't say I've ever been much of a dancer, I mean sure... I'll give it a go. I have rhythm at least, but I'm now at an age where I'm probably old enough to be able to pull off 'dad dancing' and give the word some real personification. Last night consisted of myself & my equally intoxicated pal putting on live 2-man show for the people of Slug & Lettuce, who insisted on sitting around the edges of the dance-floor, watching us and filming for their Insta-stories rather than getting involved themselves. My partner and her bestie found it hilarious, but I'm not sure many others did. That's when I realised that the younger generation of the modern era - perhaps as they've grown up behind a screen - don't share the same values as us '90s kids'. Whilst our main priority is to lose ourself completely, and laugh at ourselves through stupid behaviour, those emerging from adolescence now are focused on sitting, solemn looks on faces, and posing for the 'Gram.

Of course, I felt that familiar gut-punching sense of embarrassment and shame when viewing the footage back the next morning, aware that somewhere in the world, I've probably become an overnight TikTok sensation on behalf of my failure to complete a sufficient twerk. But no matter how cringe the antics of 'the night before', if you can wake up and say to yourself that you enjoyed yourself, and had a good time, then at least you can say you were true to yourself. I'll always remember a quote from Ricky Gervais during one of his stand-up shows, in which he told the audience of a promise he and his brother, Bob, made as a tribute to their late mother. That life was about laughter, and achieving it at all costs. He mentioned a pact they'd forged where if the opportunity ever presented itself to embark on a comedic moment, they'd go for it, no questions asked. My own philosophy is somewhat similar...

... Though it seems that what makes people laugh hardest, is my drunken alias as a Dancing Queen.
