17th December - Here's how my Karting debut went...
I remember when I was a small child, my Father would occasionally come home with these little metal trophies. As much as he was a cunt, he was a supremely skilled driver, having driven cars since the age of 14 during his delinquent upbringing, and I regularly remember him steering the wheel with his knees whilst using his hands to eat Cornish Pasties and smoke cigarettes, when I was in the car with him during my youth.
He once came home with a '2nd place' trophy from Karting, which I treasured more than his Winners ones due to the cool little design on top of it, of a metal driver in a helmet. I placed it in my window and kept it there for at least half a decade and can envision it perfectly in my mind's eye, with a felt green fabric bottom to the base of it. Well, I'd love to tell you how my first ever karting experience went today, but the truth is, I haven't been yet. I'm gearing up for it now, as both my Sons and Myself take to the track this afternoon in a 5-way race alongside my partner, and my mother.
When I think of karting, I think of that famous 'Supermode' video where Axwell and Steve Angello raced around to the backing of 'Tell Me Why', or even the finale on Friday afternoon during 'Fun-House' on ITV where the red and yellow teams would do battle and my cousin and I would watch passionately from my Grandfather's house, cheering on our favourite team. Though knowing how incredibly clumsy I am...
... There's every chance I'll be skidding into the tyre wall.
