27th October - Pepsi Goes Retro!

In the great pantheons of classic football adverts, there are several which stand the test of time... Nike have perhaps had the monopoly on this particular field. Their 1998 Brasil commercial, with Ronaldo and Denilson etc performing nutmegs and stepovers in Paris airport was pure genius, and they even managed to top their efforts in 2002 with their 'CAGE' concept, where a 3-a-side team including Thierry Henry and Francesco Totti did the business against Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos.

But undoubtedly, one of the finest adverts of this era was Pepsi's 2002 campaign, in line with World Cup in Japan & South Korea, as the likes of Raul, and David Beckham faced off against a group of Sumo Wrestlers. The shirts worn in this ad became iconic, and instant fashion classics, with the soft drinks company later building the 'Pepsi All-Stars', a team used in other PR campaigns, made up of Football royalty like Pavel Nedved, Edgar Davids, Emmanuel Petit, Dwight Yorke, Juan Sebastian Veron, Gianluigi Buffon, and... Erm.... Britney Spears.

Now, with retro all the rage, and a brand-new World Cup tournament approaching, Pepsi have turned back the hands of time to team up with AOF (Art of Football) on a limited edition drop of special items, including bucket hats, jerseys, and bum-bags, all modelled by current day superstar, Vinicius Junior. I have no shame in admitting that I was one of the first in queue this morning to pick up one of these gorgeous shirts, and if you've not yet seen the 2022 revamp of this classic ad, starring the likes of Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, and Ronaldinho, then check it out below. We might be 20 years older than we were in 2002, but it is truly amazing to realise, that...

.... Pepsi has gone retro!
