29th September - My Legacy

I've heard that word thrown around a lot recently... "Legacy". What does it mean? Why is it important? You'll often hear Boxers discussing 'legacy' when referring to their career, and the fights they've had. Well, in life terms, legacy is defined as 'something that you leave behind'. Many make the error of believing that to be financial, which I've never been a huge fan of. How can a child learn to make their own way in the world, or to fight/strive/motivate themselves daily to go on and amass their own fortune when they're already sat on a nest egg? Inheritance makes people lazy. It makes them complacent. Instead, leave a legacy on who you are, and what you stood for.

I was surprised to see news today of the death of iconic rapper, Coolio, who was 59 years old. When I was younger, I thought 59 was a fair old age, but now, as my own Mother approaches such a landmark, I realise that I'm nowhere near ready to say goodbye to her, nor do I feel I've had the appropriate amount of time on earth with her to make memories and experience things together. Leaving a legacy is the one thing you have to do to mark your short time as a tourist on this planet. A legacy is how you're remembered, and the things people say about you, or stories they pass on to future generations. I'd prefer for mine to not be bland.

I want my great grandchildren to recall of a happy, loving, caring, and comedic man. A leader of the pack, with strong morals when it comes to be loyal, trustworthy, honest, and above all, reliable. I want them to know that I lived. I travelled. I was cultured, and experienced as much of this World as it could give me. Strong, wise, intelligent, and articulate. A provider, a fair man, but not a coward. One who spoke out on important topics, and issues, one who fought for what he believed to be right, and tried to assert himself on situations to over-rule any social injustice. I wish to inspire not just my own two Sons, but those who I've not yet met, those are not yet born. Generation after generation of Gable. That, is MY legacy...

... What will yours be?
