21st September - Insights on Age

I asked my Son to guess my age at the weekend. He's still young enough to not fully grasp the concept of age, and though he knows his own candles on cake numbers, he wildly opted for '63' when guessing mine. It was a stark contrast from the bus driver on Friday who said 'You don't need an adult ticket?! You need a young person's ticket... You're not more than 25 are you?!', when I tried to purchase a single into the centre. This morning, I sat with a group of young students (18-21 ranges), imparting some wisdom on them and asked them how they would market a music festival. Who they would market it to, and their general impressions on their target audience.

I sat back and watched their discussion and found myself highly amused at their conversation. The first suggested they target the 18-25s whilst another remarked that they should broaden their audience and go for 18-30. "Nah", said one of the more vocal members of the group. "We should do 25-30, because they splash out on purchases for themselves, but are still less likely to have families at that age. When you get to that age, you have more money and you have a stable job but you don't necessarily have family. You have more cash to splash on yourselves. We could target it to the 25-30 group on YouTube too, because those ages use YouTube to improve their golf swing and things but over 30 don't really use it."

Just for the record... I'm 32 and definitely still use YouTube.
