25th July - My Stand-Up Debut!

Well then, it's all come down to this... I'll be taking to that so legendary of stages, which has housed the likes of Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Alan Carr, Michael McIntyre, Jack Whitehall, and so many others over the years. That's right, I'm performing at the Comedy Store in London this evening as I make my stand-up debut, something I've been planning for 4 and a half years in total. Truth be told, I've always had a keen interest in comedy from a pretty young age. People would often tell me how funny I was, naturally, though I found that being 'staged' funny was much harder, as comedic wit was just something which came to me naturally in an ad-lib situation, rather than actually writing content out and rehearsing it until you could memorise it fully.

For Christmas, or Birthdays, I'd always ask for DVDs, and 90% of the time, they were of stand-up comics who I admired, and who I could study, or learn techniques from. Lee Evans, Peter Kay, Jimmy Carrr, Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Sean Lock, Lee Mack, Jon Richardson, Russell Howard, Paddy McGuinness, Kevin Bridges... My collection was endless, but it was only when I saw Joe Lycett at the Comedy Store in January 2018 that I thought, "Yeah, fuck it, I'm gonna give this a go!" I spend the next 18 months collecting material and thoughts in my everyday life, which I could then translate into a comedy script, but COVID put pay to my plans, and I had to wait a little longer to make my stage debut.

Tonight, that night has finally arrived, and though I'm certainly not expecting to win the whole thing on my first attempt, I see this as a momentous show of great big hairy bollocks either way. To stand up in front of the most famous comedy club in the United Kingdom is one thing, but to do so whilst telling jokes about deepthroating your Maths teacher back in your school days, is quite another... Got a feeling that's gonna be the punchline that fucks me up tonight! Regardless, 'be lucky' as they say in this industry...

... I'll see you all in Leicester Square!
