21st July: Brighton with Fatboy Slim

Over the past few weeks, I've built up a bit of a bromance with a certain legend, after e-mailing over some tracks he can use in his sets. Ol' Norm was impressed with how well my selections suit his vibe, and consequently, I've now been asked by work to pop down to his big event on Brighton Beach today and check out the big man himself in action. Luckily, this means a bit of a lay-in, as I don't have to venture into the office today, and it also means... A big dirty ass rave by the sea! Lovely jubbly!

The event itself is actually a 20 year anniversary of (as far as I'm aware), the biggest dance music party in history, when more than 200,000 people packed the pebbled beach in Summer 2002 to catch their finest homegrown star doing his thing! Now, a double-decade on, and Fatboy Slim is ready to repeat the feat, on what promises to be another huge day of fun all round. I have to admit, I hold a real affinity and respect for Norman, because in an ever-changing musical landscape, he's always stuck to his natural style and just done what feels right.

Never before have I actually seen a DJ with such an encyclopaedic knowledge of almost every record ever released. Norm's got a seriously HUGE collection of vinyls in his Brighton home, and what this man doesn't know about the history of dance music, isn't worth knowing. (Skip to 08:04 in the video below to take a look at his crazy collection). Anyway, I must dash. The smell of fresh cod, and taste of cold lager, awaits! All together now... "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...."
