19th Feb - Freedom!
I felt more grateful than usual today. To be alive, to be outside, walking, and breathing in the beauty of Mother Nature (the fact I got pissed on via Storm Eunice is irrelevant). Grateful to be free from COVID isolation, and grateful because my taste has returned and I've so far acted on yesterday's promise, and devoured both a Bhuna and a Jalfrezi in the span of 16 hours. Aside from my grateful nature, I've also been researching the fabled 'IMDB Top 250', a collection of the (publicly-voted) greatest movies of all time.
Though a huge barrage of my own favourites make the cut (Wolf of Wall Street, Inception, The Dark Knight, Empire Strikes Back, Fight Club, Infinity War etc etc), I also realised there's still a huge chunk of titles on there that I'm yet to witness. Perhaps the most glaringly obvious is 'The Godfather' which has long been in the podium positions, but also Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, The Matrix, Goodfellas, Gladiator, Die Hard, and Kill Bill. As something of a movie-buff, I'm pretty ashamed to admit these glowing omissions from my 'watched' list, and I can only hope classic cinema proves more fruitful than modern cinema, because I watched two movies yesterday and felt horribly let down by both.
The first, 'The King's Man' represents a series which has suffered a slow and gradual decline ever since Taron's Egerton's superb performance as 'Eggsy' in the 2014 original. The second, 'Free Guy' starring the ever-personable Ryan Reynolds started brightly, and with a fairly innovative plot concept too, but eventually descended into a chaotic jamboree of messy and convoluted madness. (Perhaps my mood on that one was influenced by the fact it was close to 3am by that point).
All eyes in my chill-binge of a weekend now turn towards this evening and the much anticipated scrap between Khan and Brook, and a 'scrap' is exactly what I hope we get. No tactical cat-and-mouse shit, just a real street brawl between two men who quite openly despise one another. But to summon the energy for what promises to prove a hugely exhilarating evening, I'm gonna need some energy so I might go for a nap now. Bye.
